The housing landscape in Tasmania is shifting fast. In 2025, the rising cost of land, materials, and labour has made traditional home and unit developments increasingly challenging to deliver. Many developers and investors are finding that by the time plans are drawn, approvals are granted, and construction is completed, the numbers simply don’t stack up.
That’s where tiny homes, particularly our Bigger Tiny Homes, are changing the game. They offer a faster, smarter, and more cost-effective way to create high-quality housing without many of the challenges of conventional builds.
The reality of traditional developments
Tasmania’s construction industry continues to battle the rise in material costs and labour shortages. What might have been a viable unit development even five years ago is now a complex and costly process. Between securing trades, coordinating large-scale builds, and meeting compliance requirements, developers often face unexpected blowouts in both time and money.
This is particularly challenging in regional areas where housing demand is high, but resources are limited. Communities need solutions that can be delivered faster, without compromising on quality. That’s where our tiny homes come into play.
Why tiny homes work
Tiny homes offer a practical alternative. Built at our HQ in Launceston, we’re not battling on-site challenges, which reduces variables and streamlines the construction process. Our tiny homes are designed with longevity in mind, offering comfort, functionality, and style without the burden of a full-scale construction project.
For developers, this means lower upfront costs, fewer delays, and more flexibility in how the homes are used – whether for long-term rentals, short-term stays, or owner-occupied housing. For people, it means quicker access to housing at a time when it’s needed most.
A prime example of this is our Scottsdale unit development.
Originally built to provide long-term housing for Scottsdale residents, this
project demonstrates how tiny homes can meet real community needs. By
delivering well-designed, comfortable units quickly and cost-effectively, we
were able to provide a sustainable solution for a region where housing options
are limited.
Right now, we’re working on a development of three BIG70s on Vermont Road, Mowbray. These larger models offer all the benefits of a tiny home but with more generous living spaces – perfect for families or even shared housing. Over on Bennett Street in Kings Meadows, we recently installed two BIG60s, with one of these homes set to become a short-term rental.
Our Bigger Tiny Homes are designed to feel like a complete home while still maintaining the efficiency and affordability of the tiny home model. They’re a flexible solution, just as suitable for long-term residential housing as they are for short-term accommodation, and they’re opening up endless opportunities for investors and communities.
The future of development in Tasmania
As housing challenges continue to evolve, it’s clear that traditional solutions aren’t always enough. Tiny homes, especially our Bigger Tiny Homes, are proving to be a practical, future-focused alternative. They allow developers, investors, and communities to move forward with confidence, knowing they’re investing in housing that is both functional and financially sustainable.
From Scottsdale to Vermont Road and Bennett Street, we’re proud to be delivering developments that show what’s possible when you think differently about housing. Tiny homes aren’t just a trend – they’re a solution built for our future.
