Container Tiny Homes vs Bigger Tiny Homes

03rd September 2024

At Tiny Homes Tasmania, the possibilities are pretty endless when it comes to living tiny. To ensure our tiny home solutions suit almost everyone, we offer two unique living solutions: Container Tiny Homes and Bigger Tiny Homes.

But what’s the difference? And why might one option suit you better than the other?

Each home option offers distinct features tailored to different needs, but both excel in customisation, allowing you to create a space that truly reflects your lifestyle.

Whether you’re drawn to the efficiency of a Container Tiny Home or the spaciousness of a custom-built Bigger Tiny Home, understanding the differences and customisation options will help you make the best choice for your future home.

Where versatility meets modern minimalism: Container Tiny Homes

Container Tiny Homes are the ‘OG’ Tiny Homes Tasmania product, and one that we continue to love delivering to clients right across the country.

Notably, these are built from repurposed shipping containers (each container having only completed a single one-way journey to Australia) and come in 20-foot and 40-foot sizes. We find that these homes are particularly well-suited for those seeking a practical, stylish, and efficient solution.

What’s to love about the Container Tiny Homes?

  • Tailored designs

While Tiny Homes Tasmania provides a variety of pre-designed packages, each Container Tiny Home can be fully customised within its shipping container walls. Whether you select a 20-foot or 40-foot unit, you can adjust the layout to fit your specific needs. This means you can design your container home to serve as a studio, a guest house, or any other functional space you can think of.

  • Floorplans & finishes

Choose from pre-set floorplans, finishes, and fixtures, or collaborate with Tiny Homes Tasmania to create a design that suits your personal preferences. The flexibility in customisation ensures that your Container Tiny Home is not just a standard model but a reflection of your unique style.

  • Practical adaptability

Container homes are ideal for a variety of uses, from short-term accommodation to a more permanent dwelling for family members. Their customisable nature means that you can adapt the design to include features like accessibility enhancements or additional storage solutions.

Some food for thought …

Our Container Tiny Homes will typically accommodate one bathroom, and up to 2 bedrooms, depending on the container size, which make them the ideal guest house, minimal workspace, or short-term accommodation option.

Given that the primary foundation is a shipping container, it’s worth considering that the space in a Container Tiny Home is limited to a choice of 20- and 40-foot sizes compared to the larger Bigger Tiny Homes models. While this is generally a non-issue for singles or couples looking to down-size, a family might struggle to feel comfortable in such a space.

Expansive, bespoke spaces: Bigger Tiny Homes

When you’re seeking more space without leaving the tiny home lifestyle behind, the Bigger Tiny Home might be more your style. These Bigger Tiny Homes offer an attractive alternative to our container homes.

These homes are custom-built from the ground up, providing ample room and extensive customisation options. Plus, they are built as one unit which makes them completely road-transportable and easily moved to your site.

Why are Bigger Tiny Homes so appealing?

  • Extensive design freedom

Unlike Container Tiny Homes, Bigger Tiny Homes start as blank canvases. This allows for a high level of bespoke design. You can work closely with us to create a layout that includes up to three bedrooms and other features that adapt to your unique needs and wants.

  • Personalised layouts

From the overall floor plan to the smallest details like fixtures and finishes, Bigger Tiny Homes are designed to suit your exact specifications. This means you can incorporate larger living areas, expansive kitchens, or customised storage solutions.

  • Enhanced comfort

The increased space of Bigger Tiny Homes allows for greater comfort and flexibility in design. You can include features like larger bathrooms, more extensive dining areas, and more open living rooms, all while holding onto that low impact living that comes with a tiny home.

A couple of things to consider…

Our Bigger Tiny Homes generally come with a higher price point due to the bespoke nature of their construction and the additional space they offer, but are still super affordable - find out for yourself. And, because we’re building them from scratch, it can mean a slightly longer construction time compared to the quicker assembly of Container Tiny Homes (but don’t stress, our tiny team is still big on efficiency)!

That said, when comparing these two factors with that of a standard-sized home, you’re still way ahead. In other words, choosing a Bigger Tiny Home will save you time and money in both the short- and long-term.

Making the choice

When choosing between Container Tiny Homes and Bigger Tiny Homes, consider how each option aligns with your needs for customisation and space.

Container Tiny Homes are ideal if you value affordability, quick setup, and the ability to customise within a defined framework. They offer a versatile solution for various purposes and come with the benefit of a strong, durable structure. The ability to tailor the design to your needs, whether through pre-set options or custom modifications, adds a personal touch to these homes.

Bigger Tiny Homes are perfect if you’re looking for more space and extensive customisation. They offer the opportunity to design a home that meets your specific requirements, making them suitable for those who want a spacious, custom-built living environment. And with their fully road-transportable configuration, they are a great solution for those looking to try tiny living on for size (without feeling like they’ve lost all their precious space!).

The right choice for you will depend on your priorities regarding space, budget, and the level of bespoke design you desire. Whichever option you choose, you’ll be joining the tiny house movement and embracing a lifestyle that celebrates freedom, sustainability, and creativity.
